Hockey Pool Fame

2025-26 Regular Season

Winner- Ranon Bult- ($450)- 979 pts

2nd- David Bunch- ($50)- 958 pts

3rd- Selena- 930 pts

4th- Zach Bult- 928 pts

5th- Gord Lyall- 897 pts

6th- Jason Burkhart- 848 pts

7th- Dan Jessen- 841 pts

8th- Ryker Tong- 835 pts

9th- Jimmy Matheson- 804 pts

10th- Ben Richman- 769

Standings Competition Winner: Ranon Bult ($35)

Ranon won both the pool and the side pool this year. Back to back regular seasons for him. Dare I say the start of a dynasty? Nobody without a last name Bult has won since 2023-24 reg season. Not much to say about this season. Canucks traded Quinn Hughes who turned out to be a Trump loving simp, so while I stopped watching Canucks games out of boredom as they flailed their way to the basement, I suppose in hindsight, we don't need Maga morons captaining our team. Hopefully the draft gods will be kind, and please, please, please, let's take a break from the Swedes for a while.

2025 Playoff Pool

Winner- Zach Bult- ($300)- 153 pts.

2nd- Jimmy Matheson- 119 pts.

3rd- David Bunch- 108 pts.

4th- Ben Richman- 104 pts.

5th- Ryker Tong- 78 pts.

6th- Gord Lyall- 66 pts.

7th- Jason Burkhart- 58 pts.

8th- Dan Jessen- 54 pts.

9th- Dan Johnson- 53 pts.

10th- Ranon Bult- 66 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Gord Lyall

Another pool, another Bult win. I suppose the odds favor that result when 30% of the membership comes from the same family. Zach took a run at his brother's record, set just last year. He fell short like the Oilers did for the second year in a row. Not much else to say in a rematch of last year's cup final and another Bult win. It feels like we are simply caught in a time loop or some kind of purgatory. Let's run it again...

2024-25 Regular Season

Individual Winners:

Art Ross- Ben Richman (Kucherov 121 pts)

Best Defenseman- Dan Jessen (Makar 92 pts)

Best Goaltender- Jason Burkhardt (Hellebyuck 113 pts)

Best Pts./Game Avg- (0.00)

Standings Competition Winner: Dan Jessen ($25)

Back-to-back wins for Ranon. It was a super close race between him and his brother right down to last couple of days. And it is in fact a Bult/Burkhart Bros sweep 1-3. Notably, Jason had probably the highest scoring goaltender in pool history. From first to last, the pool was also relatively a very close one with only 136 point spread. Not a lot of memorable moments from the season other than Ovi passing Gretzky reg season goals record. Pretty neat to see. I just wish both men weren't so cozy with Putin and Trump respectively. I try to separate the athlete from the politics, but seeing a Canadian legend in a MAGA hat and a player I have admired for always playing "the Canadian way" being so buddy buddy with a murderous dictator, kind of diminishes previous good feels. When "they" round me up along with all the dissidents, I will regret not just shutting up and watching hockey.

2024 Playoff Pool

Winner- Ranon Bult- ($270)- 158 pts.

2nd- Jimmy Matheson- 122 pts.

3rd- Ryker Tong- 105 pts.

4th- Gord Lyall- 92 pts.

5th- Jason Burkhart- 77 pts.

6th- Dan Jessen- 77 pts.

7th- David Bunch- 70 pts.

8th- Ben Richman- 68 pts.

9th- Zach Bult- 66 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Ranon Bult

Ranon wins his second playoff pool in the most convincing way imaginable. Confidently cruising past the 14-year-old playoff record set in 2010, Ranon is now top of leader board for most points. It was emotionally tough seeing a longstanding record fall, almost as tough as it would have been to see Oilers break the Bettman curse. I would have rather beat the pool record myself, and I would rather see the Canucks break the curse. While Bobrovsky seemingly wanted to choke away a 3-0 series lead, it was the Oilers that didn't show up in game 7. I'm ok with that. Breadman (aka Jimmy) joined the pool pretty hot with what must be the highest playoff total for a new member. Too bad for him all he wanted to see was Ben come in last. Not Last! Ben celebrates.

2023-24 Regular Season

Best Defenseman- Ryker Tong (Hughes 92 pts)

Best Goaltender- Jason Burkhardt (Hellebyuck and Bobrovsky 88 pts)

Best Pts./Game Avg- (0.00)

Standings Competition Winner: Dan Jessen and Ryker Tong ($15)

Looks like in 2018 I made a bold prediction that Dan's total of 1023 would never be broken. I guess I need to go get myself a crystal ball (maybe I'd have more success in the pools as well) because that was one of the worst calls since someone said Patrick Stefan was going to have a long prolific career. Yep. Dave smashed the record this year, and I won't make the same mistake twice. This will probably be beaten next year, or maybe in some alternate universe it's already beaten. Who knows? I don't. Regardless, an outstanding total boosted by some key trades Dave made to snag a couple overlooked players who had career years. Other records were set as well. Gord N. took a radical playoff-style approach to his draft and selected a nearly universal Ottawa Senators team. The result... well he had a 12 pt game followed by a record-setting 14 pt game early in the season, and then predictably came last in the pool. The prestigious Eric Wallace medal is waiting for whenever you want to pick it up Gordo!

2023 Playoff Pool

Winner- Ryker Tong- ($300)- 119 pts.

2nd- Ranon Bult- 114 pts.

3rd- Gord Lyall- 90 pts.

4th- David Bunch- 83 pts.

5th- Chris Crawford- 77 pts.

6th- Jason Burkhart- 74 pts.

7th- Dan Jessen- 72 pts.

8th- Jesse Peters- 68 pts.

9th- Zac Bult- 53 pts.

10th- Dan #2- 51 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Hudson Burkhart

Well I guess it is cool that Vegas won a cup after only being in the league for 6 years. And I guess it's cool that Ryker won his second pool after just joining the group (thanks for brining in a ringer Dave). It was a strange playoffs. Top seed in the east bounced after one round and a lot of teams expected to do well, didn't. Vegas was the northern most team in the final four teams, which also gave this playoffs a strange feeling. Ryker pretty much had this one wrapped up by the end of the second round, but left just a little space for Ranon to make a run, thanks largely to Mark Stone's efforts, he came close but ran out of games. It ties for the second closest gap between winner and top loser.

2022-23 Regular Season

Winner- Ryker Tong- ($350)- 1002 pts

2nd- Ranon Bult- ($50)- 987 pts

3rd- David Bunch- 970 pts

4th-Gord Neave- 969 pts

5th- Dan Jessen- 969 pts

6th- Zach Bult- 929 pts

7th- Gord Lyall- 913 pts

8th- Chris Crawford- 894 pts

9th- Ben Richman- 765 pts

10th- Jason Burkhart- 750 pts

Individual Winners:

Art Ross- Gord N. (McDavid 153 pts)

Best Defenseman- Gord N. (Karlsson 101 pts)

Best Goaltender- Gord L. (Georgiev 96 pts)

Best Pts./Game Avg- Gord N. (1.00) ($100)

Standings Competition Winner: Gord L. ($15)

Probably the most competitive pool for first place running up to the end of the season with about 5 or 6 members having a legitimate shot at the beginning of March. Gord N. probably should have won it with his McDavid pick and Erik Karlsson trade (top forward and D), but he shot himself in the foot with an "epic" meme designed to burn Ryker, who took that helping hand and coasted past everyone to the victory. It is a truly a Canadian hockey pool as well when all the individual awards go to a person named "Gord" (see bottom result table). Also begrudgingly we note that the Bruins hit an all-time NHL record for wins in a season and finished with 135 pts. No one ever said this is a just world.

2022 Playoff Pool

Winner- Ben Richman- ($240)- 144 pts.

2nd- Gord Lyall- 121 pts.

3rd- Ranon Bult- 102 pts.

4th- Dan Jessen- 97 pts.

5th- Jason Burkart- 93 pts.

6th- Zach Bult- 92 pts.

7th- David Bunch- 85 pts.

8th- Ryker Tong- 78 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Dan Jessen

How can a hockey pool let one member get McDavid and Draisatl? Three rounds is more than enough time to inflict massive damage, which is what these two did for Ben. He also had Hedman and Adam Fox who had an unreal playoffs, so it was a pretty comfortable win for Ben who was AWOL for the entire trash talk on the Fantrax app. While the rest of the pool was somewhat competitive (with Gord going from last in round 1 to second in round 2), Ben had it all wrapped up by the end of the second round. Gord was runner-up in both categories having a nearly flawless bracket but picking TBL to win the cup instead of COL. It was nice to see Avs win the cup though, lots of Canadians on that team. Maple Leafs did what they usually do and failed to close out a series in the first round, Flames inexplicably forgot how to defend against EDM and CAR showed a bit more playoff promise, but NYR surprised everybody a little.

2021-22 Regular Season

Winner- Zach Bult- ($250)- 1060 pts

2nd- Jason Burkart- ($50)- 942 pts*

3rd- Gord N.- 942 pts

4th-Dan Jessen- 917 pts

5th- Ben Richman- 909 pts

6th- Gord Lyall- 898 pts

7th- David Bunch- 878 pts

8th- Ranon Bult- 835 pts

*Won by first tie break, most scored pts.

Individual Winners: (Not for Cash This Year)

Art Ross- Jason (McDavid 123 pts)

Best Defenseman- Zach (Josi 96 pts)

Best Goaltender- Ben/Gord L. (Vasilevsky/Bobrovsky 87 pts)

Standings Competition Winner: Gord L. ($20)

Five out of eight members reached the 900pt club this year with another two falling short by a handful of points. Something in the Gatorade this year? Or rusty goalies? Not sure. Nevertheless, Zach's team put together a dominating performance shattering the old record for most points in a pool. In almost any other pool, the top five could have had a pool-winning total, so thanks for that Zach! We also had a tie for second place with Jason winning once it became clear that Winnipeg would not start their franchise goalie in a meaningless game (a goalie that Gord N. had and would have won second if played and got a win or an OTL).

With memories of covid lingering, it was not easy to engage in this season, I often wondered if it may shut down at any moment as the league went through a few pandemic-related postponements of games. But the season limped along and maybe soon normalcy will arrive to the sport's world. We shall see...

2021 Playoff Pool

Winner- Dan Jessen- ($120)- 101 pts.

2nd- Gord Lyall- 81 pts.

3rd- Zach Bult- 70 pts.

4th- Ranon Bult- 58 pts.

With only four members playing everyone had really stacked teams. And yet only the winner managed to break the hundred points line. While Gord jumped out to an early lead with his Avs-heavy lineup, he was completely out of skaters after the second round. This allowed Dan to cruise to another win by virtue of being the only member to select skaters from the Stanley Cup defending TB Lightning. Would have set a record no problem if he had selected more than two, but we were all a little unsure they would get past Florida in the first round. What promised to be a really point crazy pool turned out to be a dud and over after the second round.

2020-21 Regular Season

Winner- Ranon Bult- ($250)- 659 pts

2nd- Zach Bult- ($50)- 643 pts

3rd- Ben Richman- 632 pts

4th-Dan Jessen- 626 pts

5th- Mark Lewis- 614 pts

6th- Gord Lyall- 573 pts

Another Covid-shortened season. This ran from January to May. Somehow the pool allowed Ranon to select McDavid, Pettersson and Marner. (Not that Pettersson helped). Ranon was more or less in control the whole short season with a little bit of a challenge from his bro. Who knows though, if Zach had picked a goaltender that actual got a win (17 pts between his two picks), Zach probably wins this one.

2020 Playoff Pool*

*Due to covid this was a box pool so points aren't comparable to usual playoff scores.

Winner- Mark Lewis- ($240)- 134 pts.

2nd- Zach Bult- 125 pts.

3rd- Ranon Bult- 119 pts.

4th- Jason Burkhart- 105 pts.

5th- Ben Richman- 99 pts.

6th- Jesse Peters- 95 pts.

7th- Gord Lyall- 90 pts.

8th- Dan Jessen- 86 pts.

9th- Justin Z- 83 pts

Is a box pool better than no pool? I dunno know. Ranon did a great job developing the box categories though, very well done. It was nice to see hockey again though. Cheering for the Canucks was fun, the team punched above their weight and gave a lot to be hopeful for in the future. Tradition of newcomers winning the pool continues.

Standings Competition Winner: Gord L. ($30)

Covid. That's all I can say while SMH. IMO this year sucked. It was a really close race the whole year with Jason up the majority of it. GordL had chased him down, but McDavid and Makar got hurt, right as he approached, meanwhile, Dan utilised his last injury trade to jump into the fray and overtook GordL, in what became a three-horse race to the finish line with a month to go. And then Covid. So Dan sat in second for, I think a day maybe two, before the shut down, and collected second place when Commissioner announced the league would move on to the playoffs in the summer. Bummer. Anyway, this is more of a personal dear diary than a summary of the year. Highlights include a 18 point night for GordL from seven skaters, Jesse came close with a 17 point night featuring a perfect goal, and David had a goalie (Rinne) score a goal. We never had a toast at a playoff pool either, so Jason - here's to you you bastard!

2019 Playoff Pool

Winner- Dan Jessen- ($240)- 144 pts.

2nd- Ranon Bult- 67 pts.

3rd- Jesse Peters- 54 pts.

4th- Ben Richman- 53 pts.

5th- Gord Neave- 52 pts.

6th- Gord Lyall- 44 pts.

7th- Chris Crawford- 32 pts.

8th- Zach Bult- 28 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Dan Jessen

Oh how Rota Fortunae turns! In a reversal of the regular season, Dan went from last place to a dominating first place that the pool has never seen before (much like the St. Louis Blues who went from the basement in December to the Stanley Cup penthouse by spring). He also won his first side pool by being the only member to have a team in the Conference Championship round. Zach had a devastating fall from grace as he failed to pass the Andy Line thus permanently etching his own moniker, "the Zach Zone" on the apparently somewhat formidable Mt. Wolski. Other than these extreme highs and low lows it was a utterly disappointing pool all around. Due to almost every top divisional seed being ejected in the first round, pretty much the entire pool suffered low bar scores. But the Raptor won the NBA championship so I actually watched a basketball game (don't tell anyone). Finally, big praise to rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington. I was super impressed with how he always bounced back from a loss (16-2 for the season after losing a game), and he kept his team in it during the first period of game 7 while Boston was taking it to the Blues. Rask had a great season as well but I am sure he is mad at himself for letting in 2 goals on 4 shots that period.

2018-19 Regular Season

Best Pts./Game Avg- Gord L. (0.98)

Standings Competition Winner: Gord L. ($30)

This year, Zach proved the adage: "the best ability is availability" - confirming my suspicion years ago that a key to success was health. Zach achieved a remarkably high number of games played with quality players compared to the rest of the pool. This is impressive because overall this was the strongest year for the whole field of pool members. We had five new additions to the 900 point club, a new record in scored points per game, and every member had an average worthy of the top ten.

2018 Playoff Pool

Winner- Dave Bunch- ($240)- 138 pts.

2nd- Dan Jessen- 114 pts.

3rd- Gord Lyall- 113 pts.

4th- Gord Neave- 111 pts.

5th- Zach Bult- 102 pts.

6th- Ben Richman- 90 pts.

7th- Ranon Bult- 75 pts.

8th- Chris Crawford- 22 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Zach Bult

Well, finally, after years of frustration Gord L. has solved the Washington puzzle. He loaded up on Capitals and with their Stanley Cup win they carried him to his best playoff total he has ever had. And yet he still lost the pool. It seems the change-bearing member Ranon brought to the group may be a ringer. Dave blasted through the first two rounds at an epic pace never seen before, with Dan chasing at his heels, both petered out but not before they established themselves as first and second (the reverse of the regular season result). Ultimately, however, it has still been gratifying to see Ovechkin finally hoist the holy grail. I think with that critical game 2 stick save and his resurrection from a horrible regular season Holtby had a strong case for the Conn Smythe (so did Kuznetsov with most points) but Ovi as captain and spiritual leader of the team does make sense, and he had the most goals of the playoffs. Also Vegas making it to the final will represent a near apex of achievement for a new sports franchise. Highlights of the year include Ranon's Pasternak having a 6 point in a night, Dave's team having a 13 point night and Gord L. having a 10 pt game in the final round while coming from seventh place to third in the last two rounds. And of course, probably the biggest question of all this summer brings: Has Chris merely failed to pass the infamous "Andy line" or has he also by doing so created a new low bar that will be referred to as the "Crawford line"?

This year we also officially ratified a new policy that $10 will be withheld from the first place pot to be allocated towards securing live stats at the pool standings website.

Standings Competition Winner: Zach ($30)

This year started with a new recruit paying his entire entrance fee in change. If he was looking for an electronic transfer of these funds to his bank account, he achieved his goal coming in second place. First place for this record setting year was Dan who sets the new high bar which will likely not be passed for a long time- if ever. Dan's year was quite frankly amazing. He did not burn a single injury trade and the two trades he did make were of what would have been his lowest two scorers. On top of this his entire team missed only 2 games which was due to Gaudreau's dad going into the hospital. Dan also had nine perfect goals from Benn, Seguin and Klingberg. On the ice the Vegas Golden Knights defied all odds and had the most successful inaugural season of any sports franchise.

This year we also introduced a dual goaltender draft. Players picked two goalies; and instead of an injury trade, the goalie with the higher points represents the member's team and the second goalie's points are thrown out. This appears to have been a success and will be implemented moving forward.

2017 Playoff Pool

Winner- Chris Crawford- ($180)- 90 pts.

2nd- Ranon Bult- 77 pts.

3rd- Zach Bult- 74 pts.

4th- Dan Jessen- 71 pts.

5th- Gord Lyall- 65 pts.

6th- Gord Neave- 50 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Matt Gordon

When Chris reigns he pours. Chris now has the outstanding distinction of being the only pool member to win both the regular season pool and the playoffs in the same year (not once but twice). Here’s to you, you bastard!

Initially, it looked like Ranon would run away with this one. He had picked all the right Capitals, all the right Senators, and all the right Oilers. But this year was truly a battle of attrition. With last pick, Chris managed to load up on Stanley Cup winning Penguins and that pretty much did it. Not to take away from Chris but the entire pool’s failure to grab any Pens before Chris reveals how wrong everyone was about how this year’s playoffs would play out as much as how crafty Chris’s picks were. That said, Matt was the only bracket player to pick Pens to win cup and thereby won his THIRD straight bracket in as many years that he has participated. One wonders if Gordon Head Hockey pools is entering a new phase with a lack of parity seen in the current NBA world. Or perhaps GHHP and the NHL are in the midst of a dynastic period (only 4 teams have won the cup in the last 9 years).

Standings Competition Winner: Ranon ($20)

- “An annual tradition”: Last season, my excitement for the start of the 2015/2016 pool caused me to forget which week the draft was. I showed up at Gord’s house a week early. This season it was Ben who could not wait to get the ball rolling as he paid us a visit 5 days before the draft was scheduled to take place.

- “Pull the goalie”: By the end of the season at least 3 of the 8 goalies drafted will be or will have been, traded. As some or all of you are aware, there is a rule stating that any goalie who achieves fewer than 50 starts or 60 pts will be eligible for trade. Both Ben Bishop, and Roberto Luongo appear destined to fail at both; meanwhile, Jonathan Quick barely played a shift before he decided that LA wasn’t going to be good and took an injury vacation.

- “Ranon does not win”: Jokingly last year, Dan (Nemesis) pre-emptively congratulated me on winning the regular season pool. At the time it seemed I was going to run away with it. He and Gord both lamented that it was going to be the end of a great tradition “Ranon does not win”; however, a short time later Dan’s team woke up and surpassed mine to claim the title in the final week. As fate would have it, I was poised once again to win this season, and even now my team is performing well enough, but a few weeks ago Roberto Luongo chose to stub his toe or something and fail to get the necessary points to remain on Crawford’s team. With a trade for a better goalie, Crawford is more than likely to eclipse the 16 point lead I currently have.

- “A ‘Quick’ turnaround”: Dan was long out of the contention for this season. Since the opening puck drop it seemed that Dan’s team had decided to roll over. Much has changed in the last few weeks…. after FINALLY! making his goalie trade, Dan is in 3rd place and gaining on both Crawford and I. If Luongo pulls off a miracle and picks up 18 pts or 10 starts between now and the end of the season he could be looking at a top-2 finish.

- “Redemption”: A few years ago, Gord Neave decided to join our pool for a season. At the conclusion of that year, he sat in 2nd-last (the last place guy has not been heard from since). Fast forward to today and you will see that he is currently in 4th and for the better part of the season had been in serious contention for a top-2 spot. Key injuries and trades have pushed him back to 4th now, but it’s been a much better year than the first time around. Perhaps the playoffs will be where you claim victory, eh? That reminds me…..

- Ranon

This will be the first and last season that the ill-conceived goalie "grace trade" affects the result of a winner in Gordon Head Hockey Pools. Moving forward this clause is removed. Injury trades for goalies will still be available. A new rules page with all the changes we have grandfathered in will be developed over the summer.

- Gord

2016 Playoff Pool

Winner- Ranon Bult- ($180)- 127 pts.

5th- Dan Jessen- 61 pts.

6th- Zach Bult- 35 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Matt Gordon

Hell has frozen over! Ranon finally won a hockey pool. The world no longer makes sense. It was a convincing victory after Jessie's Predators were knocked out. Both Ranon and Jessie leaned on the highly productive Sharks for points and Ranon's two Pens gave him the definite edge. Also, for the second year in a row, the bracket came down to Matt and Gord. Matt needed the Penguins to win the cup and Gord needed any other team that made it to the Conference Finals. By the middle of the Cup round Matt's odds went from 1 in 4 to a 95% chance of winning. He did, and became back-to-back bracket champion.

Zach picked first, followed by Ranon, then Ben, Jessie, Dan and Gord

People were very excited for another year of Gordon Head Hockey Pools. When Ranon showed up at my door for the draft during dinner he asked, "Am I early?" I replied, "Yes. You're a week early!"

This turned out to be an epic finish. A nemesis showdown royale. After the young guns, Jesse and Zach, got off to a hot start, Ranon took over and built up a comfortable lead. But thanks to another onslaught of injuries, Dan was able to claw back some ground and pass Ranon in the final week. With a twelve point lead going into the last Saturday, Dan looked to pad his advantage but instead was stunned by a fantastic night for Ranon. It all came down to the final game of the year with Dan ahead by a mere three points. With two players to Dan's one, Ranon got one point back but ultimately fell short. A two point victory in the closest regular season pool to date.

Also for the first time ever, both Gord and Jeff qualified for the goalie grace trade. Jeff having the lower goalie got first choice and his upgrade moved him from last place to fifth.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Matt Gordon

This year was a Nemesis battle. After revealing to Gord why they are nemesis, Ben went on to grab almost the entire Blackhawks squad which Gord found "interesting." No one else predicted Chicago to get out of the first round which turned out to be completely wrong. The Ducks v. Hawks final was the rebels last stand against the Empire but after a grueling seven game series, the seemingly beleaguered Hawks got Ben the win and moved on to win a cup for themselves.

Brody picked first, then Chris, Dan, Jeff, Ranon, Ben and Gord

This was another close year with just under 150 points seperating first from last. For most of the season it was a head to head battle between Brody and Dan. But sadly for Dan Lundqvist decided he had done enough half way through the year (after the pool trade deadline) and not having a goaltender killed Dan's chances for glory. That said the race for second became the highlight of the end of the season. With three days to go a handful of points seperated Ben, Dan and Gord. Thanks in part to a Mark-Andre Fleury shutout and the general good production of his players on Saturday night, Ben squeaked out a victory and landed himself in the money.

5th- Gord Lyall- 69 pts.

6th- Dan Jessen- 53 pts.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Ranon

This will forever be one of the closest playoff pools. In the final round it was between Brody and Ben. Brody was up on Ben by ten points. However, it was Brody's Kopitar (LAK) against Ben's four Rangers. Whoever won the cup was likely going to win the pool. LAK did what they were built to do and rolled over the Rangers. Brody is the newest winner of Gordon Head Hockey Pools. Another point of interest is that Dan set the dubious record of losing all his players at the conclusion of the second round.

Ben picked first, followed by Ranon, then Gord, Mike, Dan

Standings Competition Winner: Chris ($25)

Another year of Ben. He laughed at us all at the round-up/play-off draft, as he considers himself the least knowledgeable member of the pool. And  yet he comes out on top again. Hmmm. It was another dominating victory as well. After a brief battle with Crawford, Ben pulled ahead and stayed there (despite losing Stamkos early in the season). This year was definitely marked with Ben style play as drafts and trades were often motivated out of spite instead of rational decision making. All in all, it made for a slightly silly but fun year (especially for Ben- again).

Playoff Bracket Winner: Gord

This year Dan won his second playoff pool. By loading up on Pens, he was able to secure a huge lead by the second round and then coast to victory. The playoffs themselves were really good, much drama with a bang of a finish as the Hawks shocked those damn Bruins in game 6, scoring two goals in the final minute and a half to win the Cup. It was also interesting that the final four teams this year were the previous four Cup winners, which shows excellent team building and great coaching. The bracket proved to be more interesting than the pool once Dan had it in the bag. By the Conference Finals it was almost a guarantee that Dan would also win the bracket by virtue of having a couple first round match lengths correct, unless there was one outcome. In order for Gord to win the bracket, the Blackhawks had to win the Cup. And indeed the Hawks shut down the nasty Bs while preventing a Dan sweep of the pot money this year.

Dan picked first, followed by Ranon, then Chris, Brody, Ben and Gord.

Standings Competition Winner: Chris ($40)

Much to everyone's dissatisfaction, this year was a lockout shortened season with only 48 games starting in January. The pool had to scramble to find available members, and as a consequence entry in the pool was only $20 with a winner takes all pot. Gord led pretty much the entire way, with two known hiccups, one at the beggining of February when Dave passed him for a day, and the other at the end of March, after Dan made two trades and passed Gord for a day. Other than that he never looked back... well almost didn't look back. With yet another Sidney Crosby injury, Gord spent the rest of the season in April watching Dan catch-up, fall-back, catch-up etc. until he ran out of time. It's tough to say what would have happened in a normal season. Some big nights this year though. Gord set a record night with 18 points including a 10 point game from two players, and Dan took two runs at that record falling short at 17 points each time, notably he predicted his first run, and only a Fleury injury in the middle of the game prevented him from a new record.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Chris

These playoffs will likely go down as the most competitive playoff pool ever, Chris won the pool by passing Ben in the second to last game of the playoffs, with an assist by Elias in a cup losing effort. And with this win, along with the bracket win, Chris almost completed a sweep of the entire year, which leaves us begrudgingly acknowledging the 2011-2012 year as "the year of Chris;" and he is now our first true champion- with a target on his back. This said, these playoffs were also the most embarrassing for all of us. Only the winner was able to match the previous low bar of 65 pts and all time new lows were set. Andy's gamble on the Canucks has given us a new low bar which will likely never be repeated. If it wasn't for his Henrique pick, he would not have made it to 30 by the last round. Many of us were knocked out of the running by the first or second round. The memorable first round Pittsburgh/Philly series, with its outrageous scoring, and ultimate win for Philly sunk many of us and vaulted Chris to the win with his two Flyers and two Devils.

Dan picked first, followed by Ranon, then Gord L., Shaun, Andy, Chris, Gord N. and Ben.

Standings Competition Winner: Gord L. ($80)

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Ben from first to last. Chris comes in and does a last minute sweep of the draft and rocks the pool for its entirety! Ranon and Dan battle it out all year; Gord L. goes from seemingly perennial second place finisher to dead last most of the year, only to claw his way into fourth; Gord N. the bridesmaid of three different categories. In this game there are no guarantees. Although there is an element of skill, in scouting and drafting the right kind of players, there are so many variables that often makes this pool akin to betting on horses. Chris's horses were by far the thoroughbreds of the year. Another excellent regular season, better than the first.

Chris picked first, followed by Ranon, then Dan, Gord L., Ben, Gord N.

Playoff Bracket Winner: Gord

The sophmore playoff pool was fantastic. Much more competitive, more strategy, more side bets, and, with the introduction of the bracket, more opportunity to flex our understanding of the game. Dan's win was a significantly smaller margin than Jeremy's the previous year, but this field was much tougher; and the Flyers were a lot less lucky, so were the Habs. I can see the signs of the competition and skill level increasing over the following years. This year demonstrated how unpredictable yet consistent hockey can be concerning the draft of hockey players to perform and produce points in professional sport's toughest tournament.

The first season was a very memorable one. Injuries dicatated a little to much of the drama, and in the end- stability, games played and consistent scoring led Ben to victory.  This season saw Ranon take an early lead, then Gord grasping a three month hold on the "coon" postion (ie first place or looking to win it all) until Ben mounted a slow yet steady assault on Gord's lead, surpassing him by February and then coasting to end as our first champion.
